Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

Minimally Invasive BPH Treatment Options for Men Across the Caribbean

An enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, is one of the most common urinary conditions affecting men as they age. Although BPH is not prostate cancer, it can cause symptoms that interfere with sleep, daily comfort, travel, work, and quality of life.

Caribbean Urology Innovations helps men across the Caribbean explore modern treatment options for enlarged prostate symptoms, including minimally invasive alternatives to long-term medication or more invasive surgery.

What Is BPH?

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. As the prostate grows, it can press against the urethra and make it harder for urine to pass normally.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Waking at night to urinate
  • Weak or slow urine stream
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Urgency
  • Dribbling
  • A feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied
  • Urinary retention in more advanced cases

These symptoms can range from mildly annoying to highly disruptive. For some men, BPH becomes a daily quality-of-life issue.

Standard Treatment Options for BPH

Many men are first advised to monitor their symptoms or make lifestyle changes. Others may be prescribed medication to relax the prostate or shrink the gland.

Medication can help some patients, but not every man wants to stay on medication long term, and side effects can be a concern.

For more advanced symptoms, traditional surgical treatment may be recommended. One of the most common procedures is TURP, or transurethral resection of the prostate, where excess prostate tissue is removed surgically to improve urine flow.

These options can be appropriate for many patients. However, some men may be candidates for less invasive approaches.

Minimally Invasive BPH Options

CUI helps patients access minimally invasive BPH treatment options through our Toronto clinical facilities in Canada. These treatments are designed to improve urinary symptoms while reducing the burden of more invasive surgery.

Depending on the patient’s prostate size, anatomy, symptoms, health history, and treatment goals, options may include:

Rezūm

Rezūm uses water vapor therapy to treat excess prostate tissue causing urinary blockage. Over time, the treated tissue shrinks, helping improve urine flow and reduce BPH symptoms.

iTind

iTind is a temporary device placed inside the prostate area for several days. It gently reshapes the prostatic urethra to help improve urine flow, then the device is removed.

HIFU for BPH

For selected patients, HIFU may be considered as a treatment option for enlarged prostate symptoms. HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target prostate tissue with precision.

Finding the Right Option

There is no single BPH treatment that is right for every patient. The best approach depends on the severity of symptoms, prostate size, anatomy, bladder function, medical history, and the patient’s priorities.

CUI helps men begin with a consultation and medical review to determine whether minimally invasive BPH treatment may be appropriate and what additional testing may be needed.

Accessing BPH Treatment in Toronto

When appropriate, we may refer patients for advanced BPH assessment and treatment at our Toronto clinical facilities in Canada.

Patients begin with a review of their symptoms, PSA history, prostate imaging, medication history, previous procedures, and any relevant urology reports. From there, we help determine whether one of the available minimally invasive options may be suitable.

Looking for Options Beyond Medication or Traditional Surgery?
