Prostate Cancer
Advanced Focal Prostate Cancer Treatment Options for Men Across the Caribbean
A prostate cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially when the options presented seem limited to active surveillance, radiation, or prostate removal surgery.
For some men with localized prostate cancer, there may be another path. Focal therapy is a more targeted approach that treats the area of cancer while aiming to preserve the rest of the prostate and reduce the risk of urinary and sexual side effects.
Caribbean Urology Innovations helps men across the Caribbean understand whether advanced focal prostate cancer treatment options may be appropriate for their diagnosis.
When Standard Options Do Not Feel Like the Right Fit
Many men diagnosed with prostate cancer are told to choose between monitoring the cancer, treating the whole prostate with radiation, or removing the prostate surgically.
These options may be appropriate for many patients. But for carefully selected men, especially those with localized prostate cancer confined to a specific area of the prostate, focal therapy may offer a more precise treatment option.
The goal is not simply to treat prostate cancer. The goal is to treat the right cancer, in the right location, with the right level of intervention.
Focal Therapy for Qualified Patients
Focal therapy is designed to target the cancerous area of the prostate rather than treating or removing the entire gland.
This approach may be considered for select patients whose cancer is localized and clearly visible on imaging and biopsy. Suitability depends on several factors, including the location of the tumour, cancer grade, PSA history, MRI findings, biopsy results, prostate anatomy, and overall health.
CUI helps patients begin with a careful medical review so they can understand whether focal therapy may be a realistic option before making a major treatment decision.
HIFU and NanoKnife IRE
Through our Toronto clinical facilities in Canada, qualified patients may be considered for advanced focal therapy options, including HIFU and NanoKnife IRE.
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to heat and destroy targeted prostate tissue.
NanoKnife IRE uses irreversible electroporation, a non-thermal technology that uses electrical pulses to disrupt cancer cells in the treatment zone.
Having access to both technologies matters because tumour location can affect which treatment approach is most appropriate. Some lesions are better suited to HIFU, while others may be considered for IRE depending on their position in the prostate.
More Than 20 Years of HIFU Experience
Our Toronto team was the first centre in North America to perform HIFU for prostate cancer more than 20 years ago.
This long experience matters. Focal prostate cancer treatment requires careful case selection, precise imaging, accurate biopsy information, and advanced technical judgment. Our principal physician has also trained dozens of other physicians in these techniques, helping expand access to focal prostate cancer treatment beyond our own centre.
Advanced Precision With MRI Fusion Guidance
CUI connects patients with one of the few centres in North America offering both HIFU and NanoKnife IRE, supported by MRI fusion-guided diagnostic and treatment planning.
MRI fusion guidance helps physicians better understand where the cancer is located and plan treatment with greater precision. This is especially important in focal therapy, where success depends on accurately identifying and targeting the cancer while protecting surrounding structures whenever possible.
Accessing Prostate Cancer Treatment in Toronto
When appropriate, we may refer patients for advanced prostate cancer assessment and focal treatment at our Toronto clinical facilities in Canada.
Patients begin with a consultation and medical review, including PSA history, MRI results, biopsy reports, pathology, and any previous treatment recommendations. From there, we help determine whether focal therapy may be suitable and what additional testing may be needed before treatment can be planned.
